Is glass fiber glass? Fiber yarn. What is it?

Glass is a substance in the name of brittleness. Interestingly, once glass is heated and drawn into glass fiber much thinner than hair, it seems to completely forget its own nature and become as soft as synthetic fiber, and its toughness even exceeds that of stainless steel wire with the same thickness!

The glass rope twisted with glass fiber can be called “the king of the rope.” A glass rope as thick as a finger can lift a truck full of goods! Because the glass rope is not afraid of seawater corrosion and will not rust, it is very suitable for ship cable and crane sling. Although the rope made of synthetic fiber is strong, it will melt at high temperature, but the glass rope is not afraid. Therefore, it is particularly safe for rescuers to use the glass rope.

Glass fiber can be woven into various glass fabrics-glass cloth through organization. Glass cloth is neither afraid of acid nor alkali, so it is ideal to be used as filter cloth in chemical factories. In recent years, many factories have used glass cloth instead of cotton cloth and gunny cloth to make packaging bags. This kind of bag is neither mildew nor rot, moisture-proof and corrosion-proof, durable, very popular with people, and can also save a lot of cotton and linen. A large piece of glass with exquisite patterns is attached to wall covering, and it is attached to the wall with adhesive, which is beautiful and generous, eliminating the need for painting and maintenance. If it is dirty, just wipe it with a cloth, and the wall will become clean immediately.

Glass fiber is both insulating and heat-resistant, so it is an excellent insulating material. At present, most motor and electric appliance factories in China have adopted a large number of glass fibers as insulation materials. A 6000 kW turbo-generator has more than 1800 insulating parts made of glass fiber! Because the glass fiber is used as the insulating material, it not only improves the performance of the motor, but also reduces the volume and cost of the motor, which is really three things.

Another important use of glass fiber is to cooperate with resin to manufacture various resin glass fiber composites. For example, layers of glass cloth are immersed in resin, and after pressure molding, it becomes the famous “glass fiber reinforced plastic”. FRP is even tougher than steel, neither rusting nor corrosion-resistant, and its weight is only a quarter of that of steel with the same volume. Therefore, using it to manufacture the shells of ships, cars, trains and machine parts can not only save the steel of Daxing, but also reduce the weight of cars and ships, so that the effective load is greatly improved. Because it won’t rust, it can save a lot of maintenance costs.

Glass fiber does have many uses. With the rapid development of modern science and technology, glass fiber will make more contributions.
